India has expressed the hope that democratic values and the constitutional process will be respected in Sri Lanka and reiterated to continue to extend our developmental assistance ‘to the friendly people of Sri Lanka’.
In its first formal statement on Sunday night since the political turmoil erupted in Sri Lanka a few days ago, India’s External Affairs Ministry said “India is closely following the recent political developments in Sri Lanka.
“As a democracy and a close friendly neighbour, we hope that democratic values and the constitutional process will be respected. We will continue to extend our developmental assistance to the friendly people of Sri Lanka,” it added.
India’s response is largely on the lines of the same by the US State Department and British Foreign Office which also called on all parties in Sri Lanka for adherence to the democratic and constitutional processes.
