Without Geographical Indicator (GI) registration, the Jamdani weavers cannot legally produce and market Jamdani products, said Md Abdul Halim, acting secretary of Ministry of Industries, according to a press release.
He said all the five thousand weavers in the Jamdani industrial areas will be provided a GI registration certificate. Those with the certificate will be considered as a legal Jamdani weaver.
Abdul Halim came up with the remarks while speaking as the chief guest in a certificate distribution programme, jointly organised by Designs and Trademarks department and Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) at BSCIC Jamdani industrial city auditorium on Sunday. He said BSCIC will provide all kinds of support for branding, identification and marketing of Jamdani for the registered weavers in the world market.
This time, GI registration certificate was handed over to 66 Jamdani weavers.
BSCIC chairman Mushtaq Hasan Moh Iftikhar and Joint Secretary of Ministry of Industry were also present at the programme.
