Police recovered the body of a two-year-old boy and also rescued his older brother from a house in Dhaka’s Banglamotor area and arrested their father.
Safayet’s body was covered in a shroud and was on a table when police recovered it, police said.
The law enforcers rescued Safayet’s brother Surayet, 4, and also detained their father, Akhtaruzzaman Kajol.
The cause behind death of the child could not be known immediately as no injury marks was found on his body, police said, adding that the body has been sent to the morgue of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) for postmortem.
Assistant commissioner of police for Ramna zone Ehsanul Ferdous said that the arrestee claimed him innocent saying that he didn’t kill his son as he died from electric shock, reports BSS.
He, however, said they didn’t say how the child died as they found no cut or wound on Safayet’s body, adding that they would wait for a postmortem report.
Kajol is also suspected to be a drug addict, according to family sources.
Earlier, around 7:00am on Wednesday, Kajol called his brother and sister and informed them that one of his sons had died, Kajol’s sister Rokeya Begum Keya told The Daily Star.
Following the phone call, Kajol went out of his house and purchased a shroud from a shop and also called a cleric to pray for his son, said police.
In the meantime Kajol’s brothers and sisters went to the house but he did not allow them to enter. They then informed police, his sister said.
Police rushed to the scene around 8:00am and tried to convince Kajol to open the door, he added.
“We tried to convince Kajol and told him that we would offer janaza for his child. We, from outside, saw him holding his son in one arm while carrying a sharp weapon in the other hand,” Abul Hossain, officer-in-charge of Shahbag Police Station said.
