A suspected leader of banned extremist party was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Dhopaghata area in Pabna Sadar upazila in the early hours on Monday.

The deceased was identified as Abul Hossain alias Abu Nakshal, 55, of village Purba Raghabpur under Pabna Sadar upazila. He was commander of PBCP’s Lal Potaka Bahini (red flag faction).

A team of Pabna Sadar thana police arrested him from Purba Raghabpur area on Sunday afternoon. During interrogation, Abu informed about arms den of the outlawed operatives, said Goutam Kumar Bishwas, additional superintendent of Pabna police.

According to his statement, police along with him raided Dhopaghata area at about 3:00 am on Monday for recovering illegal fire arms and explosives. When the operation team reached near the Dhopaghata Bridge, the hidden criminals opened fire on police. Police returned fire for defanse prompted the gunfight.

Abu attempted to flee from the scene and received bullet injury while his fellow operatives fled from the scene, said the additional SP adding that Abu was taken to Pabna General Hospital where he was succumbed to his injury at about 3.45am.

The deceased is accused of nine cases including murder and he was absconded from the area for long. Police recovered a gun, bullets and six rounds of Kurtz from the spot, said police.

During the gunfight, four policemen were injured. They are ASI Shahidul Islam, Rabiul Islam and constables Saidur Rahman and Abdul Jalil.
