Kalparanjan Chakma, a former minister of Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) Affairs Ministry, died of old-age complications at a hospital in the city at 12 noon on Wednesday.
He was 98, family sources said.
Kalparanjan left behind his wife, two sons, two daughters, a host of relatives, well-wishers and followers to mourn his death.
He was elected member of Parliament for two terms in 1991 and 1996 from Khagrachari. Later, he served as the first minister of CHT Affairs Ministry in 1998.
He also served as the president of Khagrachari district Awami League for long.
Kalparanjan was admitted to Dhaka Community Medical College and Hospital on July 29 as his condition deteriorated. His cremation will be held at Rangamati Bana Bihar on Thursday.
Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader expressed deep shock at the death of Kalparanjan.
In a condolence message, he prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.
PM mourns
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of former minister and ex-president of Khagrachhari district Awami League Kalparanjan Chakma.
In a condolence message, the prime minister recalled with profound gratitude the contributions of Kalparanjan Chakma to the signing of the historic Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) Peace Treaty.
Sheikh Hasina prayed for salvation of the departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family.
