Elections to 87 Upazila Parishads in 12 districts will be held on March 10.
Elections will be held in chairman, vice-chairman and reserved women vice-chairman posts at these upazila parishads.
The Election Commission on Sunday announced the first phase polls schedule of fifth upazila parishad elections at a press conference held at Nirbachan Bhaban in the city’s Agargoan area. EC secretary Helaluddin Ahmed said that the last date of filing nomination paper is February 11. The nomination paper will be scrutinised on February 12 and the last day of withdrawing nomination paper is February 19.
The secretary said the commission will hold the upazila Parishad polls in five phases. In first phase, elections will be held in 87 upazila parishads in Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Jamalpur, Netrokona, Sunamganj, Habiganj, Sirajganj, Joypurhat, Rajshahi and Natore districts.
The upazila elections were held last time in 2014 in six phases. The next polls to the local government bodies are due within 180 days prior to the expiry of their terms.
The Upazila Parishad was initiated in 1985 and election was held on a single day in 1990 and 2009. The then EC in 2014 conducted the election in six phases.
Electronic voting will be used in the upazila election this time. EVMs will be used at all Sadar upazila parishads as per the EC’s decision.
The election to 480 upazilas out of 492 will be held in five phases. Elections to the next three phases are likely to be held by March and last phase is likely after the month of Ramadan.
Besides, the commission has announced the polls schedule of reserved women seats of 11th parliamentary elections which will be held on March 4.
The last date of filing nomination paper is February 11. The nomination papers will be scrutinised on February 12 and the last date of withdrawing nomination paper is February 16.
