Jatiya Party (JP) nominated candidate Washiur Rahman Dolon on Saturday withdrew his nomination paper from the upcoming mayoral election in Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC), reports BSS.
Dolon flanked by his party leaders and workers withdrew his candidature from Returning Office giving support to Awami League nominated candidate AHM Khairuzzaman Liton in RCC election.
Earlier, local unit of 14-party alliance extended support to Liton in his mayoral election. The alliance took the decision at a meeting held at the city unit office of Awami League here.
The meeting decided that all the alliance leaders and workers would work together to make the “boat symbol”” win in the city polls scheduled to be held on July 30.
With this breakthrough, AHM Khairuzzaman Liton (Awami League), Musaddeque Hossain Bulbul (BNP), Habibur Rahman (Bangladesh Jatiya Party), Shafiqul Islam (Islami Shashantra Andalan) and Advocate Murad Murshed (Independent) remain in the mayoral election race.
According to the election schedule, July 9 has been set as the final date for withdrawal of candidature. Election symbols will be distributed among the candidates on July 10.
Returning Officer Amirul Islam said there are 3,18,138 voters, including 1,62,053 female voters, who will exercise their franchise at 137 centres to elect a mayor, 30 ward councilors and 10 councilors in reserved seats for women in the election.
