PEN Bangladesh held a discussion meeting followed by Iftar on 3rd June at Minto Road. The meeting was chaired by PEN Bangladesh’s Executive President Kazi Rosie. Chief Advisor to PEN, Poet Nurul Huda, President Author Masud Ahmed, Vice-President Professor Masuduzzaman, Professor Jharna Rahman, Poet Aslam Sunny and Secretary General Dr Syaeda Irin Zaman were also present at the meeting. In the first phase of the meeting progress of PEN Bangladesh’s ongoing projects were discussed and five committees were formed in order to facilitate the work.
Among others, Author Manjurur Rahman, Dr S M Morshed, Economist M S Siddiqui, Syeda Huda, Researcher Shahed Mantaj, Journalists Muhammad Shahabuddin and Jahid Biplob were present at the meeting. In the second phase, PEN Bangladesh writers read out their own stories as part of a reading session.
Bangladesh PEN was originally established in the year 1948 soon after the partition of India as the then Pakistan PEN by Late Dr Muhammed Shahidullah as its President and Late Professor Syed Ali Ahsan as the Secretary General. After the liberation of Bangladesh in 1971, the Pakistan PEN in Bangladesh was renamed as Bangladesh PEN. The Centre strives to promote the universal mission of PEN through both public events and advocacy. A decision was also taken to hold a round table discussion on ‘Freedom of Expression’ in second week of July.
