The month-long Amar Ekushey Book Fair, a yearly event for booklovers, will come to an end today.
All the way through the month, the book fair has witnessed influx of big crowds– young boys and girls in particular.
Marking the final days, people from all walks of life are flocking to the fair venue, strolling from stall to stall, browsing books and buying their favorite ones.
Visitors love to throng the book fair as there is no better opportunity to hang out with friends and family members and wonder around the venue— Bangla Academy premises and Suhrawardy Udyan— with euphoria.
“The book fair is not only for buying books, but it has long since been a festival for us,” said Sirajul Islam, a senior citizen who came to the fair with his two grandchildren and daughter.
“With the passage of time my book fair going partners changed. I started with friends, after that with better-half and now with grand children,” he told this correspondent while buying books from a stall at Suhrawardy Udyan portion of the fair.
Jannatul Ferdous Nadiya, a private university student who came to the fair with her friends, “I came to the fair two times before but did not buy any books. This time I have come to buy some of my favorite books, as the fair is nearing end for this year,” she added.
However, traders said their sales hit records every day as visitors come and buy in great numbers.
“Last week of the fair is the actual trading time when every visitor turns into buyer,” said Shamal Paul, vice-president of Bangladesh Publishers and Booksellers Association.
“No one returns from the fair without buying minimum a book during the concluding days,” he told this correspondent adding that this year they had noticed higher sale than that of previous years.
Last two days of the fair are going to see maximum crowd, he hoped.
More than 4500 books have hit the fair till 27th day already well surpassing last two years’ release of 4134 and 3646 books respectively.
Meanwhile, a concluding ceremony will be held today with State Minister for Cultural Affairs K M Khalid present as chief guest while president of Bangla Academy Emeritus Professor Anisuzzaman will preside over the function.
Director of Bangla Academy and member secretary of the Amar Ekushey Book Fair 2019 Jalal Ahmed will present the report of the fair while Director General of the Academy Habibullah Siraji will deliver the welcome speech.
