The election of Cox’s Bazar municipality is going to be held today (Wednesday) after seven and a half years. Five candidates, including the Awami League and BNP candidates, will be fighting for the mayor post. The general councilor post has 64 candidates against 12 wards, while the women councilor has 17 candidates against four reserved seats. The total voters number 83,728, including both men and women.
Ballot papers, ballot boxes and other election materials have been sent to the all the polling centers.
Election Commission is ready to hold the polls fairly and peacefully. For this, strict security has been ensured.
The administration as well as EC has taken all preparations for a good selection. Cox’s Bazar District Election Officer and Returning Officer Md. Mozammel Hossain said that 39 polling centers in 12 wards of Cox’s Bazar municipality. All the centers have been taken as sensitive. The Election Commission has arranged special emphasis on deployment of law enforcement agencies in the same way, he added.
According to him, 12 executive magistrates will perform duty for 39 centers of 12 wards. There is a magistrate for each ward. A judicial magistrate with them and will perform the duties.
Additional Superintendent of Police of Cox’s Bazar Afrozzul Haque Tutul said, among the law enforcement agencies, 6 platoons of 2 Platoon BGB, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and 12 to 14 police officers in each center have gone to the center for the purpose. There is also a striking force for every two centers.
Almost one thousand law and order personnel are also involved in the security, including the Armed Police and Ansar Bahini.
Cox’s Bazar Police Super Iqbal Hossain said, “We will do everything to make the elections free, fair and neutral. Here, four stool security arrangements will be ensured in different categories.”
Acting Deputy Commissioner of Cox’s Bazar Kazi Abdu Rahman said that all steps have been taken by the administration to give a beautiful and acceptable election to Cox’s Bazar municipality.
