The 21st anniversary of Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) Peace Accord was observed on Sunday. On the occasion, different programmes were arranged in the three hilly districts and also in Dhaka.
A discussion was arranged at CIRDAP auditorium in the capital city. Speaking at discussion, State Minister for CHT Affairs Ministry Bir Bahadur Ushwe Sing said that communal harmony, peace and development process are prevailing in CHT region. “We are taking various development programmes to accelerate development process in CHT region,” he said.
The minister said that Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had taken development programmes for the development of CHT region. But the development programmes have been hampered after assassination of Bangabandhu, he added.
Chairman of Chittagong Hill Tracts Development Board (CHTDB) Nobo Bikrom Kishore Tripura and others spoke at the discussion with Secretary of CHT Affairs Ministry Md Nurul Amin in the chair.
A colourful rally, arranged by Khagrachhari Hill district Parishad, was brought out from the Zila Parishad premises in the morning. The rally ended at Khagrachhari Town Hall following a discussion meeting on CHT treaty, peace and development.
After inaugurating the rally, Kujendra Lal Tripura, MP of Khagrachhari, said that there were misunderstanding and dispute among different groups and communities which have been removed following the treaty. “But several sections of the treaty were not implemented yet due to some conspirators. If everyone is united, it was not too late to fully implement the treaty,” he said.
Kongjuree Chowdhury, chairman of Parbatya Khagrachhari Zila Parishad, said the development which has been done in the three hill districts were possible for the treaty.
Leaders of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samiti (PCJSS-MN Larma) at the a separate discussion demanded full-scale implementation of the peace accord.
With Prafulla Kumar Chakma in the chair, the discussion was held in Pankhaiyachhra of Khagrachhari to mark the anniversary.
Speakers demanded immediate operation of CHT Land Dispute Resolution Commission and implementation of all clauses of the accord.
PCJSS-MN Larma Central Commi­ttee Organizing Secretary Bimal Kanti Chakma, Political Affairs Secretary Bibhu Ranjan Chakma, Students Affairs Secretary Sudarshan Chakma and Youth Affairs Secretary Pranab Chakma among others, attended thediscussion.
