Founded by Dhaka Commerce College, Mirpur-2, Dhaka, and managed by a Board of Trustees and a Syndicate, it has established a big reputation since its inception under the Private University Act-2010, modelled on North American Universities, with the approval of the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh and the Ministry of Education.
Professor Md Abu Saleh is the Vice Chancellor of BUBT. He was one of the famous teachers of the University of Dhaka with his honesty and wisdom.
The members of the BUBT Trust are Prof Dr Shafique Ahmed Siddique (Chairman), Mr A F M Sarwar Kamal (Former Chairman), Md Shamsul Huda FCA, Mr Ahmed Hossain, Lieutenant General Dr A K M Zafrullah Siddiq (retd), Prof Mian Lutfar Rahman, Tahmina Azam, Md Shihab Rizwan, and Dr Kazi Nur-ul-Ferdous.
The permanent campus of BUBT is located at Rupnagar, Mirpur-2, with four spacious buildings and sports zones on 7 acres of land and with all facilities for higher education, adjacent to Dhaka Commerce College, National Zoo and National Botanical Garden.
Started with only around 60 students, BUBT slowly climbed up the ranks as one of the esteemed private universities in Bangladesh. Currently there are over 8,000 students studying 19 academic programmes under 11 departments and 6 faculties that include: Faculty of Business; Faculty of Law; Faculty of Arts and Humanities; Faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences; Faculty of Social Sciences; and Faculty of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. The university consists of both undergraduate and graduate programmes with 290 faculty members and over 100 staff members. It remains open on all days of the week except holidays, and academic year in BUBT begins from October and runs through September of the next year. An academic year is divided into three trimesters, Fall — October-January, Spring — February-May, and Summer — June-September.
The university provides career counselling for its graduating students, and it has collaboration with a good number of foreign universities, health research centres and various industries.
Moreover, BUBT runs a research centre where teachers have been trained so far on Research Methodology. The outstanding achievement of BUBT in the very first decade has been to remain student focused. The university never compromises with quality, professionalism and sustainability. The university believes in the motto — “committed to academic excellence” — a slogan that thrives the spirit of everyone.
The students of BUBT are always playing vital roles in preparing themselves competitive for the present world. The members of the Debating Club, Games and Sports Club, Photography Club, Cultural Club, English Club, Business Club, Social Welfare Club, EEE Club, Textile Club and IT Club not only compete in the national level but also prove their individual charisma in outstanding fields. There are an active group of Rover Scout and the BUBT Alumni Association.
The university has two large libraries with lots of books, journals and references and it has an Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) to enhance quality of the performance. The Department of English of BUBT has established a Language Lab under the Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP) of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Ministry of Education, jointly financed by BUBT and the World Bank. Equipped with various modern facilities, the lab can cater to students’ every academic need.
BUBT has also been involved in cybercrime training programmes in collaboration with the ICT Division. Officers of Bangladesh Police and Anti-Corruption Commission of Bangladesh participate in the training on Cybercrime Investigation Techniques.
Meritorious faculty members are the strength of BUBT. They mostly have acquired their higher studies from the renowned universities of home and abroad. The care and guidance of them contribute a lot to motivate the learners’ interest in education and research. A number of seminars, symposiums, workshops, film shows, and quiz competitions on different aspects are regularly organised by the departments of BUBT with a view to expanding the horizon of the mental boundary of the teachers and students alike to think analytically, creatively and in an organised way.
BUBT excels in not only providing academic excellence but also constantly aiming to go further in giving their students the best of everything so that they can reach their potential to the fullest sense. The capacity and zeal of the university are speeding up its activities to cope with the global standard higher education.
