City polls are integral parts of a country’s democracy. Hence, it is startling news not only for the voters and electoral candidates but also for the democracy of our country that the Intelligence agencies have issued a warning saying that anti-liberation Jamaat-e-Islami and its allies might create massive violence and engage in conspiracies during the Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barishal City Corporation polls. Lawmen have also alerted the Election Commission in this regard. Therefore, it is time for the authorities concerned including EC and Intelligence agencies to take special security measures in order to check the activities of Jamaat-Shibir and its allies.
However, the warning noted that miscreants might try to destabilize the city corporation polls, especially in Rajshahi and Barishal. On July 12, the commission held a meeting with different law enforcing agencies on a work plan to deploy law enforcers in the three city corporation polls.
Reportedly, the commission will soon issue a circular directing the administration and police of these city corporations to hold joint meetings on maintaining the law and order. During the meeting, intelligence agencies talked about the situation prevailing in the city poll areas, and take necessary steps in this regard, as militants or miscreants can create massive violence and anarchy to destabilize the polls.
Reportedly, elections to the Rajshahi, Barishal and Sylhet city corporations are scheduled for July 30.The EC is using Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) partially in these city polls.
We are told that members of law enforcement including Police, Rab, Ansar, Armed Police Battalion, Coast Guard and Border Guard Bangladesh would start maintaining law and order in the polling areas.
According to the commission, working papers on the deployment, 24 personnel will be deployed at vulnerable polling centres, while 22 members, at general polling stations to maintain law and order.
The commission will deploy law enforcement agencies on July 28 to July 31 in the city polls. The polls campaigning will end midnight July 28.
However, considering the situation, we urge authorities to pay more attention and be more vigilant in the three city corporation areas to ensure a fair, transparent and violence-free election. Also law enforcement members need to maintain law and order in the three city corporation polls so that none can raise any question about them.
