Election fever has gripped the three city- Rajshah, Barishal and Sylhet– as both the mayoral and councilor candidates are passing busy days with campaigning to win the race.
The polls to the Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC), Barishal City Corporation (BCC) and Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) are scheduled to be held on July 30. The symbols for the candidates were allotted on July 10.
After getting the electoral symbols, mayoral candidates of two major parties– Badar Uddin Kamran of Awami League and Ariful Haque Chowdhury of BNP– offered prayers at Hazrat Shahjalal (R) shrine and started the campaign by distributing their leaflets. The other candidates also began their campaign.
All the 135 candidates, including six mayoral candidates, of the BCC polls are now busy in electioneering. The candidates and their supporters are carrying the poll campaign by distributing leaflets among voters.
Awami League-backed mayoral candidate Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah and BNP-backed mayoral candidate Mujibor Rahman Sarwar are passing busy time in campaigning.
Centering polls, electioneering in the cities is gaining momentum day by day with contestants various programmes to attract voters.
BSS adds: the candidates of the RCC polls are seen meeting voters irrespective of age, sex and creed and caste with posters and leaflets to drum up support for them from early morning to midnight.
Flanked by large number of party leaders and workers the mayoral contestants are also seen meeting voters seeking their support throughout the day.
Workers and activists of the candidates were seen very much busy hanging posters and opening election offices. Several parts of the city got a new look with huge posters, banners and festoons.
“I am very much happy and enjoying the changed atmosphere,” Nazrul Islam, a sexagenarian voter of Budhpara area told the BSS.
He expects all the contestants and their supporters will follow election code of conduct till the last day of the campaign.
Afroza Akter Poly, a resident of Upashahar area, expressed her happiness over the election mode across the city. She, however, expects peaceful and congenial atmosphere during the entire electioneering period.
A total of 217 candidates are contesting in the RCC polls. Of them, five for mayor, 160 for general councilors and 52 for reserved seats for women councilors.
Assistant Returning Officer Atiar Rahman said AHM Khairuzzaman Liton (Boat), Musaddique Hossain Bulbul (Paddy Sheaf), Habibur Rahman (Jackfruit), Shafiqul Islam (Hand fan) and Advocate Murad Murshed (Elephant) are the mayoral aspirants.
Among the mayoral candidates, Awami League nominee AHM Khairuzzaman Liton first announced his election manifesto, promising to generate employment opportunities for one lakh unemployed people if he was elected.
He announced the 15-point election manifesto at a press conference at the party’s city unit office here Tuesday noon.
In the manifesto, he put emphasis on creating of employment and accelerating of education and healthcare services to build Rajshahi as a mega city. Meanwhile, local city unit of 14-party alliance extended support to Liton. The alliance took the decision in a meeting held at city unit office of Awami League here.
The meeting decided that all the alliance leaders and workers would work together to make the boat symbol winner in the city polls.
Local unit Jatiya Party nominated candidate has also withdrawn his nomination form giving support to Liton.
Assistant Returning Officer Atiar Rahman said there are 3,18,138 voters including 1,62,053 female voters who will exercise their right of franchise at 138 centers to elect one mayor, 30 general councilors and 10 women councilors in reserved seats in the upcoming election.
