Aspirants of different parties, particularly from the Awami League and the BNP have started campaigning across the Kishoreganj-6 constituency (Bhairab and Kuliarchar Upazila), in a bid to get party nomination for the upcoming general elections.
The constituency is always considered a strong seat of the AL in Kishoreganj district as the party has been leading the constituency for last four consecutive terms.
Keeping this in mind, aspirants of other parties are campaigning strongly across the upazilas and sticking posters, distributing leaflets, holding rallies, and organizing mass communication events.
They are organizing public rallies in the upazilas every day to attract the party high command. Some are going from door to door of the people while some others are trying to persuade affluent voters into giving them the necessary support.
After independence of the country, former President Zillur Rahman triumphed in the seat for five terms. Earlier, in 2008, he won the seat against the candidate of the BNP, Shariful Alam. Following his becoming the President of the country on February 12, 2009, his son Nazmul Hasan Papon was elected in a by-election on April 3 the same year. After that, Papon was elected Chairman of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).
After death of Zillur Rahman in 2013, the incumbent lawmaker, Papon, is continuing the candidacy of AL in the constituency.
In the 2014, Papon again got nomination for the seat and was elected as single candidate. He is expected to be a candidate in the next polls for the seat. He has played a considerable role in the development of the area.
Locals and his supporters said, from the beginning of his journey, he has been working for the welfare of the area. And different development work is undergoing.
Besides, former mayor of Bhairab municipality and AL leader, advocate Fakhrul Alam Akkas, industrialist Alhaj Md. Mucha Mia and Al leader Saidullah’s names are also in the discussion as probable candidates.
Meanwhile, District president of the BNP, Shariful Alam, is a probable candidate from the party. He has been campaigning in different areas for a long time. Besides, BNP leader Gias Uddin’s name is in discussion. BNP leader Shariful
Alam’s supporters said, ‘after getting green light from the party high command, we have started the electioneering.’
Imtiaz Bin Musa Jisan, president of Kuliarchar Upazila Awami League said, to continue the development of the constituency, there is no leader but the current MP. He hoped voter support in the upcoming election to snatch victory again.
