The Dhaka North City Corporation has taken an initiative to encourage people to use bicycles, and is set to make bicycle lanes in 22 parks and four playgrounds.
DNCC sources said, “The City Corporation has been developing 22 parks and four playgrounds under a project titled ‘Modernization, Development and Greening of open places of DNCC’. Cycle lanes will be made under the project. Work is ongoing in three parks, and lanes will be made in other parks gradually. Recently, development work of ‘Uttara Sector 7 park’ has already ended. A nearly 450-meter cycle lane has been made there.
Modernization and development work of ‘Mohammadpur Tajmahal Road Park’ was inaugurated on February 20. Shahbuddin Park at Gulshan and specialized park for children and women at Banani sector 18 were inaugurated on May 15. The work will end by March 2019. About 930-meter cycle lane has been made at Shahbuddin Park, 130 meters at Banani park, and 270 meters at Taj Mahal Road park. The width of each lane is 1.5 meters, and the cost, Tk 4,136 per square meter.
Executive Committee for National Economic Council (ECNEC) has approved the project of modernization of 22 parks and four playgrounds at the cost of Tk 280 crore. Apart from cycle lane; gymnasium, library, basketball court, walking area, fountain, praying space, seats for women, public toilet, rides for children and open theaters will also remain in those parks and playgrounds.
An institution titled ‘Vitti Sthopotibrindo Limited’ or ‘Foundation Architect Limited’ has done a new design for modernization of parks and playgrounds in DNCC.
Cycle lane has been made with specialized materials, said architects of Vitti Limited.
The specialization of this lane is water extraction system. Rain water will go under the concrete within a short time. This system is called ‘Water permeable concrete pavement’.
The architects said, “This system is recognized internationally. The materials with which the lanes will be made are environment-friendly. There will be no harm to the environment from the materials.”
Recently, popularity of the bicycle is increasing day by day as an environment-friendly vehicle. According to Facebook cyclist group, BD Cyclist information, “More than one lakh people use bicycles for various reasons in the capital.”
DNCC officials said, “The project of modernization of parks and playgrounds was taken up during the time of Mayor Annisul Haque. His dream will be fulfilled by implementing this project.”
Executive Engineer of DNCC Tariq Bin Yousuf said, “New tender will be called in November following completion of the ongoing work in three parks. At the time, the development work of more five parks will start, and gradually we will complete the development and modernization of all the parks.”
