The country is getting ultra-modern earthquake forecast technology that would provide warning 20 to 30 seconds prior to happening of earthquakes.
A Chinese research organisation would hand over the technology to Dhaka University authorities soon. In this regard, the Chinese organisation — Institute of Care Life — and Dhaka University signed a deal on Friday last.
Under the deal, a research institute on earthquake forecast would be set up in Dhaka University where researchers from China, Bangladesh, Nepal and Myanmar would conduct joint researches.
Meanwhile, the Chinese organisation has already marked out the highly risk-prone earthquake areas of Bangladesh. An elaborate plan would be devised on how to save people’s life and protect wealth of important organisations located in those areas. The plan will especially incorporate the issue of warning big industries, chemical factories and power centres of earthquakes in those areas.
Maksud Kamal, dean of faculty of earth sciences and environment of Dhaka University, will coordinate the joint researches on behalf of Dhaka University.
Kamal said, “Lives and properties of many people were saved in the last several years in China through using the earthquake forecast technology. Land structure of Bangladesh is prone to risks of earthquakes. At present quite a few of tall structures including atomic plant are being built in the country. If the warning is given 20 to 30 seconds before the earthquake, losses can be minimised by switching off activities and taking preparatory measures.”
According to Institute of Care Life, Mymensing, Sylhet, Rangpur, Lalmonirhat and Kurigram are highly prone to earthquakes.
