Ashraful Alam Asharf, the ruling Party candidate with the symbol boat, was elected as the mayor in the re-election of Kaliganj municipality on Thursday.
He bagged 11,589 votes, while his nearest candidate, the rebel candidate Juba Juba League leader Mustafizur Rahman Bizu with the symbol mobile phone secured 3.988 votes.
The re-election of the class one municipality was started at 8.00am in the morning, continued till 4.00pm. without any untoward incident.
Returning officer, also district election officer in Jhenidah Mohammad Rokanuzzaman said the voters cast their votes with enthusiasm ignoring the rain and disfavourable climate.
The position of the mayor was vacant on September 22 in 2018 when the mayor and Awami League Kaliganj unit president Moksed Ali Biswas died in
cardiac arrest.
