Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader asserted that all the arrested persons on the BNP’s list of cases are terrorists.

He made the comment while addressing a press briefing at the AL President’s Dhanmondi office on Monday. Police arrested them on different criminal charges brought against them, he said.

Earlier, BNP submitted the list of their arrested leaders and activists to the Election Commission, claiming them innocent and demanded their release. “I ask BNP Secretary General Fakhrul Islam Alamgir to come and prove even a single person of the arrestees innocent. Indeed, in the eyes of law, they all are criminals.”

Replying to a question, Quader said the process of taking nomination seekers’ interview by fugitive convict and corrupt BNP leader Tarique Rahman is illegal.

“Our question is how a convicted man can participate in election activities sitting in London. It’s clearly a violation of the electoral code of conduct,” he said.

“No matter whoever says what, it’s our responsibility to hold the election in a free, fair and peaceful manner. We have to keep patience and tolerance in certain things”, he said replying to another query.  “We expect the Election Commission will act appropriately.”

Quader said, “We have drawn attention to a justified matter. It’s totally the EC’s jurisdiction whether they take action or not in this regard.  We believe the countrymen will do the ultimate justice by exercising their right to franchise.”

Without naming BNP, Quader alleged that a party is trying to foil the election under the banner of Oikyafront.

“When a congenial environment is prevailing for a fair election, the party gathered its leaders and terrorists in the name of providing nomination forms, attacked police and burned their vehicles even after the announcement of the election schedule, which left 20 policemen injured,” he said.

He said, “The BNP alliance, who earlier urged to create a good political environment, is now trying to ruin the environment.”

AL Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif, Organising Secretary Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, Office Secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap, Relief and Social Welfare Secretary Sujit Roy Nandi, Forest and Environment Affairs Secretary Delwar Hossain, Deputy Office Secretary Barrister Biplab Barua and Central Working Committee Member Marufa Akhter Poppy were present on the occasion.
