Ruling Awami League and several other socio-cultural organizations will observe the the Shaheed Noor Hossain Day today (Friday) in a befitting manner.
The day is observed on November 10 every year, commemorating the martyrdom of a young pro-democracy activist during the anti-Ershad movement in the late 80s.
On this day in 1987, Nur Hossain gave self-sacrifice to fight against the tyrannical ruler in the capital city. He imprinted his bare chest and back with slogan “Swairachar Nipat Jak, Gonotantra Mukti Pak” (down with autocracy, let democracy be freed) and was gunned down in police firing during an anti-autocracy demonstration in city’s Zero Point. This place was renamed after ‘Nur Hossain Chattar (square)’.
Juba League leader Nurul Huda Babul and farmers’ leader Aminul Huda Tito of Bajitpur in Kishoreganj were also killed in the police firing.
Awami League will pay tribute to Nur Hossain Chattar and also offer munajat for his departed soul, says apress release signed by Awami League’s office secretary Dr Abdus Sobahan Golap.
