After winning the constituency for three consecutive times, Awami league (AL) leaders and activists under Brahmanbaria-3 constituency are confident of their victory in the upcoming 11th national polls as the present lawmaker carried out extensive development activities in the locality in recent years.
Locals said the party has now gained vast popularity in the district, and in the upcoming election, it has a huge possibility to win again.
But BNP and Jatiya Party (JP) aspirants are also active in the field of politics as their followers and supporters are confident that people of the constituency, consisted of Sadar and Vijayanagar upazilas, now want a change.
A number of 8 to 10 aspirants from AL, BNP and Jatiya Party (JP) are active at present in the field eyeing party nominations.
In 2008, AL candidate Lutful Hai Sachchu won the seat while Ubaidul Moktadir Chowdhury won the seat in 2014 under AL ticket.
Among them, AL central executive committee member and party’s district unit president Ubaidul Moktadir Chowdhury, BNP central committee’s economic affairs secretary Khaled Hossain Mahbub Shyamal and JP’s joint secretary general Rezaul Islam Bhuiyan are being mostly discussed among the voters. Al the three aspirants are conducting full-fledged campaign to get party nominations.
Besides the three, some other aspirants from AL and BNP are also active in the election race.
Shafiqul Alam, district council chairman; Syed AKM Emdadul Bari, AL nominated candidate in the district council elections; Helal Uddin, AL district vice-president and former municipal mayor; Harunur Rashid, former state minister and also president of district unit of AL; and former municipal mayor Hafizur Rahman Mollah Kochi are also active electioneering expecting the party nod.
From BNP, district BNP general secretary Jahirul Haque Bhuiyan Khokan is also active in the field.
Meanwhile, JP’s Shah Mohammad Jamal Rana is organising public meetings under own initiative besides joining social gatherings day and night. He has acceptance among field level leaders and activists.
He is optimistic about getting nomination from the party. He said that he is going to work in the field. Starting from grassroots, they have been in touch with the central leaders of the party.
Meanwhile, BNP’s Khaled Hossain Mahbub Shyamal is confident of getting party nomination. Basically, the party’s activities in the district are managed by his activists.
Former lawmaker Harunur Rashid who was elected member of parliament for five times, has missed a lot due to his age.
But there is almost no visible activity of BNP in the district. The party has limited its political programs to district city offices. Only top leaders and activists are taking part in these programs as local leaders and activists avoid in fear of being arrested.
BNP aspirant Khaled Hossain Mahbub said, “The demand for the release of the party chairman Khaleda Zia is our first issue. After her release, we would think about the elections. If the party takes part in the election and if I am nominated, I am confident of victory.”
Responding to a question, he said that they are facing obstacles in Brahmanbaria to observe any political programme.
