In a bid to get party nomination for Habiganj-2 (Baniachong-Ajmiriganj) constituency, nine Awami League (AL) leaders are conducting full-fledged electioneering in the locality.
Nomination aspirants are active on the field of politics sticking posters, distributing leaflets, holding rallies, and organising mass communication events. Every day one or the other nomination seeker is organising public rally in the upazila to attract the attention of party high-ups. Some are going from door to door of the people.
Traditionally the seat belongs to AL. After Ershad’s regime, none except for the AL candidates succeeded winning the seat. Even in 2001 national polls when AL experienced defeat across the country, a brand new candidate from AL won the seat.
In 2008 polls, the seat was given to Jatiya Party’s (JP) advocate Abid Ali Chowdhury who was ultimately defeated as he vied for the constituency under JP symbol ‘Plough’, instead of AL’s ‘Boat’. On the other hand, using ‘Boat’ symbol, AL’s rebel candidate advocate Abdul Majid Khan defeated his closest rival BNP’s candidate by a huge margin, becoming a lawmaker for the first time. In 2014 too, he became a lawmaker under AL nomination.
He is now the general secretary of district AL. Although he carried out huge development activities in his constituency, he is not so popular among the AL leaders and activists. He allegedly carries out his activities with his close ones, bypassing AL leaders and activists.
Baniachong upazila AL president Amir Hossain Master, who is involved in AL politics for last 50 years, will also seek nomination from this constituency. During struggling times, he took care of the party. After the killings of Bangabandhu and his family in 1975, he brought out protests, processions from Baniachong. For this reason, he was sent to prison for two long years.
Another nomination seeker from this constituency is district AL joint general secretary Chowdhury Abu Bakar Siddiqui. He is a dedicated worker of AL in the district. This generous and moderate politician has been seeking party nomination for many days, but in vain.
District Krishak League president and former Union Parishad (UP) chairman Humayun Kabir Reza is also another nomination seeker from the upazila, who has been carrying out electioneering for the last one year.
Another nomination seeker is barrister Enamul Islam Khan. He is a former judge and also a former ‘law officer’ of the national parliament. At present he is an advisor to the United Kingdom AL and the acting general secretary of Awami Aijibi Parishad.
Advocate Mahfuza Begum Sayeeda is also seeking nomination from here. She is the children and family welfare secretary of Swechchhasebak League central committee. In addition, she is a member of the sub-committee of children and family welfare affairs of AL.
Another nomination aspirant advocate Abul Azad, vice-president of district Olama League and former vice-president of district Aijibi Samity, has been dedicatedly working for many days for the party.
A young leader has created uproar in the locality through his dedicated activities for the sake of the party. He is Moyez Uddin Sharif Ruyel. He was the former secretary for law affairs of BCL central committee. At present, he is a member of the sub-committee on law affairs of AL central committee.
Another young nomination aspirant from the constituency is Nawshad Uddin Sujan, joint secretary of just-abolished BCL (Sohag-Zakir) central committee. He has declared his candidacy, staging show-downs in the locality with huge number of followers. He is also conducting mass communication with the upazila people.
About AL nomination in the upazila, Baniachong upazila AL general secretary Iqbal Hossain Khan said, “We want Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to nominate a person who is dear to the grassroots activists of AL, evaluating the contribution of those who in bad times risked their lives for the sake of the party.”
In this regard, the present lawmaker from the constituency, Majid Khan said, “Awami League is a big party. Those who are leaders and activists of the party can definitely seek nomination.”
