As many as 543 aspirants whose nomination papers were cancelled have appealed to the Election Commission to get approval for contesting the December 30 parliamentary polls.
The deadline for lodging appeal applications ended on Wednesday. Around 222 appeals have been filed with the commission on Wednesday while 237 were filed on Tuesday and 84 on Monday.
The hearings of the appeals will be held on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. In this regard, an appeal hearing committee headed by Chief Election Commission KM Nurul Huda has been formed.
“The CEC will lead the hearing committee to give its final decision about the appeals made by the rejected candidates,” an EC official said.
The appeal hearing will be held at Nirbachan Bhaban as the EC has made a trial room at 11th floor. The commission will hear first 160 appeals on Thursday. Then it will hear 150 more on Friday and the rest 243 on Saturday.
Candidates, along with supporters, gathered at the Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital to submit their applications to EC on Wednesday.
EC secretary Helaluddin Ahmed told reporters that if the decision to reject a candidacy is upheld during a hearing, the applicant can move to the court. The returning officers also cancelled nomination of many heavyweight aspirants for failing to meet the EC conditions. BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s nominations for three constituencies were also cancelled for her being convicted in two graft cases.
Among others, Reza Kibria, son of slain former AL Finance Minister Shah AMS Kibria for Habiganj- 2 constituency, Dhaka mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka’s son Ishrak Hossain, Dr. Imran H Sarker for Kurigram-4-constituency and popular music video model and actor Hero Alam for Bogra-4 constituency were cancelled.
Former communication minister Barrister Nazmul Huda nomination was also cancelled from Dhaka-17. Former Awami League lawmaker Golam Maula Rony, who now joined BNP, was disqualified by the returning officer of Patuakhali-3 constituency.
On December 2, one-fourth of the nomination papers submitted by potential candidates countrywide were rejected.
The commission scrutinized a total of 3,065 nomination papers, and rejected 786 applications. It approved the nomination papers of 2,279 candidates.
According to the polls schedule, the 11th national election will be held on December 30. The last date of withdrawal of nomination paper is December 9. The EC will allocate the polls symbols to candidates on December 10.
