The 50th anniversary of Anandapur High School in Fulgazi upazila of Feni was celebrated amid much fanfare and festivity on Saturday.
On the occasion, a colourful procession was brought out around 8:30 from the school premises which paraded the main streets of the city.
Founding headmaster of the school and district Awami League president Abdur Rahman inaugurated the ceremony.
In his speech, Rahman said that in 1968, he served as the headmaster of the school for two years. At that time the financial condition of the school was so bad that they authorities even could not pay his Tk 200 salary regularly.
During that time, the founding headmaster said, the school played an important role in spreading knowledge in the whole locality.
“Many of the former students of this school have been established in different fields of society after being by taught in here,” he added.
Rahman assured the audience that he would try his best to press home their demand of upgrading the school to college.
Azim Milon presided over the joint operation of Zakir Hossain and Nasir Uddin Patwary and convener of the celebration committee and Anandpur UP chairman Harun Majumder.
Among others, former students Master Siraj Mia, Abul Kalam Azad, AKM Rafiqul Haque, Nasir Uddin Majumdar, Gautam Sarkar, and SA Mamun addressed the inaugural session of the anniversary.
District Awami League vice-president Khairul Bashar Majumder Tapan was the chief guest at the afternoon session.
Fulgazi upazila chairman Abdul Alim Majumder, Chaglania upazila chairman Mejbaul Haider Chowdhury Sohel, Fulgazi upazila Awami League president Jamal Uddin, education officer Mohammad Enamul Haque, vice-chairman of BNP Jamal Uddin, central Chhatra League leader Rasel Ahmed Chowdhury, district Jubo League general secretary Shusen Chandra Shil, Chhatra League general secretary Jabed Haider, headmaster of the school Iqbal Hossain, deputy general manager of daily Bangladesh Post MH Mannan Chowdhury, Advocate Taslim Uddin, Advocate Joynal Abdin, ex-student Rafiqul Islam Kiron, among others, attended the anniversary programme.
