 Police have arrested five people for snatching a Jamaat leader from their custody in Sirajganj.

More than 200 leaders and activists of local Awami League and Jamaat-e-Islam were accused in the case filed over the incident.

Ripon Kumar Saha, sub-inspector of Ullapara Police Station, confirmed the matter.

According to the SI, police are yet to arrest Jamaat leader Alauddin Al Azad, acting general secretary of the Ullapara unit of the party, who fled while he was in handcuffs.

Police arrested Azad from Kaira Chorpara area in Ullapara Upazila on Monday. A group of Awami League and Jamaat activists led by local Awami League leader Saiful Islam Khoka stopped police and snatched him from them, according to the police.

The police named 73 suspects, including Azad and Khoka, in the case that also mentioned 150 unknown people among the accused, Sub-Inspector Ripon said.

The detainees are Khairul Islam, 25, Jewel Rana, 26, Afzal Hossain, 36, Abdul Majid, 46, and Suruj Miah, 35.
