Three Bangladeshi films–‘Bhubon Majhi’, ‘Kaler Putul’ (Dangling by a String) and ‘Doob’ (No Bed of Roses)–participated in the Asian Film Festival Barcelona 2018 in Spain. The festival will continue till November 11.
Independent filmmaker Fakhrul Arefeen Khan-directed ‘Bhuban Majhi’, a film based on the Liberation War of Bangladesh, will be screened in the special film screen category, while Aka Reza Ghalib-directed feature film ‘Kaler Putul’ will be screened in the discoveries section and filmmaker Mostofa Sarwar Farooki’s much-talked-about film ‘Doob’ in NETPAC section.
The story of the film ‘Bhubon Majhi’ evolves around a spiritual man living in Kushtia, named Baul Nohor Majhi. A journalist goes to Kushtia for making a documentary on Baul and discovers a truth. Being a Baul, he was a freedom fighter who heroically fought for the country in the Liberation War of 1971, inspired by a young girl named Farida. In the film Parambrata played the role of Baul Nohor Majhi while Aparna played the role of Farida. The film, based on the life of a true freedom fighter, depicts a number of historical incidents like the horror night scene of March 25, the East Pakistan Rifles (EPR) rebellion in 1971 and much more.
On the other hand, inspired by Agatha Christie’s 1939 mystery novel ‘And Then There Were None’, the film ‘Kaler Putul’ stars Ferdous Ahmed, Raisul Islam Asad, Ashish Khandakar, Bithi Rani Sarkar, Jannatun Noor Moon, Arif Orko, Shahed Ali, Lutfar Rahman George and Reetu Sattar, among others.
Besides, starring celebrated Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan and popular actress Nusrat Imrose Tisha from Bangladesh in the lead roles, the film ‘Doob’ is said to be loosely based on late Bangladeshi writer and filmmaker Humayun Ahmed–who divorced his wife of 27 years and married an actor 33 years junior to him who was also his daughter’s classmate in school. The filmmaker, however, has denied that it’s a biopic. He informs that the story builds up around the members of two families discovering the finer fabric of love when the headman of a family dies.
