About 25 houses were vandalised and a number of them were torched at a Jhenidah village during a clash between two factions
of ruling Awami League on Saturday night.
At least five persons were injured during the clash at Hatgoplapur village under Jhenidah Sadar upazila.
Thousands of people from Hatgopalpur Bazer, Soyail, Bhomradanga and Srifaltala villages participated in the clash.
Members of police and RAB were deployed to avoid further deterioration of situation, said police.
Locals and eyewitnesses said supporters of former Padmakar union chairman Bikash Chandra Biswas and incumbent chairman Nijamul Gani Litu armed with locally-made weapons locked into a bloody clash around 10:00 pm Saturday over establishing supremacy in the area.
During the two-hour long clash, at least 25 houses of both groups were vandalised, while a few were set on fire.
Later, the fire fighters from Jhenidah reached the spot and brought the fire under control.
Additional superintendent of Jhenidah Sadar circle Kanak Kumar Das said some of the people were detained in this connection.
