Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested two persons allegedly involved in extortions abusing the name of a senior Awami League leader.
They have been identified as Mohammad Ali and Nadia Sultana.
They were earning megabucks giving false promises of ensuring party nominations of the upcoming parliamentary polls.
Additional Commissioner (DB) of DMP Abdul Baten made the disclosers while addressing a press briefing at DMP Media Center in the capital on Friday.
Police said, “Targeting the parliamentarians, ministers, political leaders and businessmen, the criminals were conducting their extortions syndicate.”
They were demanding extortions using the name of Awami League office secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap, also the special assistant to the prime minister.
DB officials said getting complain from the ruling party leader, a team of DB (East) police arrested the two extortionists from the city’s Gopibagh area on early Friday.
They were brother and sister in relation. DB also seized two mobile phone sets, several SIM cards and two numbers of Bikash mobile banking.
During the primary interrogation, the arrested criminals admitted that they were involved in extortions. However, police yet to know how much money they earned from such extortions so far.
Responding to a question, the boss of the DB said, “We are primarily suspecting that there are several other members in the gang.”
We are also trying to identify them and to arrest them as soon as possible, he further said.
