Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Saturday claimed to have detained two people in Dhaka for allegedly posing as officials of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). They were arrested from Hajaribagh area of the capital on Friday.
The detainees are Anisur Rahman, son of Shamsul Haque and a resident of Hazaribagh’s Bou Bazar area, and Yeasin Talukdar, an agent of mobile money transfer service bKash of Dhaka’s Nabipur area.
The duo used to introduce themselves as senior officials of the ACC and extort government officials by threatening them of graft cases.
A total of 22 mobile phones including the phone they used for their bKash transactions were seized from their possession.
Anisur and Yeasin have taken at least Tk 3.5-4.0 million from about 500 government officials in the last five years by threatening to file corruption cases against them, RAB-2 said in a media statement.
The duo told RAB that they had been involved in conning since 2014. RAB said they are trying to arrest other members of the fraudulent gang.
