The Election Commission (EC) is planning to provide laminated National Identity (NID) cards on temporary basis to minors aged at least 10 years.
The commission will soon start the process of registering information about those who are 10 years old but below 18 to include in EC’s central database, an EC official told Bangladesh Post on Saturday.
In this regard, EC has taken a project which will start this year, he added. Information registration will be conducted at educational institutions while teachers of the respective schools will fill up the NID card forms on behalf of students.
On the other hands, those who are not student can go to the respective election offices for registering their names in the database.
The commission has sent iris scanners and finger print machines at every upazila and thana nirbachan offices, they added.
EC joint secretary and director of NID wing Abdul Baten said when these minors will turn 18 years the commission will provide Smart NID cards and include their names on the voter list.
EC has all kinds of preparations to implement the project, added Baten.
According to the National Identity Card Registration Act 2010, the EC can provide NID cards to any with specific conditions. Before giving NID cards, the commission will collect information of them.
NID cards are mandatory to open bank account, applying for passport, collecting VISA and many other important tasks.
