The seasonal storm nor’wester, which lashed the coastal areas and other parts of the country on Sunday, left at least 12 people dead and many others injured. The storm also damaged crops and dwelling houses.

The deaths from the storm were reported from Patuakhali, Pirojpur, Jhalakathi, Bhola, Khulna and Bagerhat districts. The storm have left a large number of people in the affected districts without power. The extent of losses have not been estimated yet.

After claiming multiple lives, destroying houses and uprooting trees, the nor’wester left a trail of destruction in southern districts. People of the affected districts are living in utter misery following the storm.

Most of the areas of coastal districts have been facing power outage since Sunday. The affected people are also facing acute crisis of food and pure drinking water.

The affected people are desperately looking for relief. The government and non-government

agencies, armed forces, fire service, local bodies and different volunteer organisations are now working hard round the clock to stand by the affected people.

All should stand by the storm-hit people as the Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated tomorrow if the Shawwal moon is sighted today (Tuesday). Everyone should take care so that the helpless people are not deprived of the joy of Eid.

Wealthy people should come forward to share the Eid joys with all. A good number of people are living in the coastal belts of the country. Storm and flooding hit the country’s coastal belts almost every year.

The local administration will have to intensify relief distribution in the worst-affected areas. The department of health must undertake measures to provide treatment to the injured people.

The authorities concerned should continue all-out efforts to ensure safe shelter, food aid and medical care for the wounded people.

We believe people from all walks of life will extend necessary support to storm hit people in affected areas.
