A case has been filed against 12 persons, including Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jatrabari Police Station ABM Forman Ali, in Dhaka court on the charge of death in police custody.

Sonia Begum, the wife of the victim Md Rana, filed the case as the plaintiff in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Assamach Zaglul Hossain on Wednesday.

Tapas Kumar Pal, Additional Public Prosecutor of the concerned court, confirmed this information.

Apart from OC Forman Ali, the remaining accused in the case are Dhaka Medical College Hospital doctor Farhana Yasmin, Dhaka Central Jail Senior Jail Superintendent Subhash Kumar Ghosh, Deputy Jailer Md Mahbub, Police Sub-Inspector Chanchal Kumar Biswas, Sub-Inspector Md Mizanur Rahman, Assistant Sub-Inspector Delwar Hossain, Constable Habibur, Constable Jonab Ali, Constable Mubarak, Police Source Sabuj and Shah Alam.

It has been said in the complaint that on March 17, the victim, Rana, was picked up from the house in the name of Detective Branch (DB) by the accused Shah Alam and Sabuj and taken to Jatrabari police station. There, they tortured Rana. They even beat him, broke his legs, and hit him in the middle of the chest and head. While torturing the victim, accused Sabuj called the plaintiff and heard the victim beating and crying and said that the beating would stop if he paid Tk 50,000.

Then the plaintiff said, “I am poor, I am bringing what I can. You save my husband. Then the plaintiff brought Tk 20,000 and gave it to Sabuj. The plaintiff was then taken to SI Mizanur Rahman. He abused the plaintiff. When the plaintiff cried, he was kicked and thrown away. The plaintiff was beaten by the police. Seeing this scene, his younger son Ratul fainted. Then the boy was given first aid and regained consciousness. Later the police asked the plaintiff to go to court.”

It is mentioned in the complaint that the plaintiff went to court on March 18. She went to the jail there to meet the victim Rana. But he was not found there. The plaintiff came home without finding him. Then on March 19, he went to Dhaka Central Jail Keraniganj and booked a ticket to see the victim. Jail authorities told the plaintiff that victim Rana is not in jail. Then the plaintiff got worried. From there, again she went to Jatrabari police station. As no information was given from the police station, the relatives were informed of the matter.

The next day, on March 20, at 8:30 in the morning, an unknown number called and asked to come to the morgue of Dhaka Medical. Later, the plaintiff identified Rana as dead.
